Converting in only three steps
FB2 (FictionBook) is an XML-based e-book format that is particularly widespread in Russia and Eastern Europe. It was developed specifically for fiction and offers a clear separation of content and formatting. Outside these regions, however, FB2 is hardly used. Most popular e-readers such as Kindle, Tolino and Kobo do not support the FB2 format. With file-converter-online.com, FB2 files can be easily converted to PDF in your browser.
Technical background to the FB2 format:
FB2 was developed in 2004 by Russian developer Dmitry Gribov. Unlike EPUB or MOBI, which consist of individual files, an FB2 file consists of a single XML file that represents the entire book content. Metadata such as author, title and genre, chapters, paragraphs, footnotes and even embedded images (Base64-encoded) are all contained in a single XML file.
The focus on continuous text also explains the name: FictionBook was primarily designed for novels and stories (as opposed to CBZ/CBR for comic books), not for complex layouts, tables or graphics. The format is therefore less suitable for scientific literature.
FB2 enjoys great popularity in Russian-speaking countries, and many e-book platforms and libraries offer their collections in FB2 format. Older PocketBook devices and various Android apps such as FBReader also support the format natively.
Why convert FB2 to PDF?
PDF is probably the most universal document format there is. It is supported by virtually every computer, tablet and smartphone, usually without the need to install additional software. If you want to share an FB2 file or use it on a device that does not support FB2, converting it to PDF is pretty much the only option. Converting to PDF, as an established format, also offers advantages for archiving.
